Transylvania beyond Bran Castle
Bran began as a medieval border and customs fortress on the crossing between Transylvania and Wallachia. Most visitors see it as a single stop, but Transylvania has several places that are worth a separate trip: a medieval town, a group of villages with fortified churches, a large castle in Hunedoara and the salt mine Salina Turda.
These places lie in different parts of the region. Treat each as its own trip with its own travel time, and check distances before you set a route. For a first visit, start with the Transylvania tours and day trips from Bran, then decide how far you want to go.

Sighișoara: the medieval town
A fortified town shaped by Transylvanian Saxon craftsmen and merchants.
The historic centre of Sighișoara has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999. It is a fortified medieval town, built up by Transylvanian Saxon craftsmen and merchants. Go for the town itself and its old centre rather than for one single sight.
Do not plan around a particular house as the birthplace of Vlad the Impaler, and check the current opening hours and prices of any tower or museum before you go. For the history behind the name, read Vlad the Impaler and Bran Castle.
Fortified churches in Transylvania
Seven villages in one UNESCO site.
The UNESCO site called the villages with fortified churches in Transylvania covers 7 villages. Biertan and Viscri belong to it. It was inscribed in 1993 and extended in 1999. The churches are surrounded by walls, and each village is a separate stop.
The World Heritage status does not mean one shared ticket. Entry prices and opening hours differ by village, so check the current ones for each church before you go.
