Dracula Castle: what the name means at Bran
Bran Castle stands in the village of Bran, in Brașov County, about 30 km from Brașov. Around the world it is known as Dracula's Castle. That is a tourist name, not a historical one. The castle began as a medieval border and customs fortress between Transylvania and Wallachia, later became a royal residence and is now a museum.
Three separate stories meet at this one building. Bram Stoker's novel is fiction. The Dracula legend around Bran is a later layer of tourism and storytelling. Vlad III, a ruler of Wallachia, was a real person, and his link to Bran is thin. Keeping them apart makes the visit more interesting, not less. If you would rather see the castle with a guide, compare Bran Castle tours and day trips before you decide.

Bram Stoker's Dracula: the novel
Bram Stoker's novel Dracula appeared in 1897. Count Dracula is a literary figure. He is not a biographical portrait of any real ruler, including Vlad III.
Stoker never visited Transylvania. He built his picture of the region from books, maps and traditions.
The novel does not name Bran. Its action is placed at the Borgo Pass, known today as Pasul Tihuța. The Bram Stoker Estate puts Bran roughly 200 km south of that pass. Do not turn this into a driving distance; it only shows that the two places are far apart.

Is Bran the castle from the novel?
This question has two answers. The castle's operators suggest that an image of Bran may have served as a model for Stoker's castle and describe a similarity they consider exclusive. The Bram Stoker Estate sees no basis for that step. It does not accept that a real building matches the one in the book, and it holds that possible knowledge of a picture does not prove a specific model.
What is not documented is this: that Stoker ever visited Bran, that he described Bran by name, or that the rooms shown to visitors today were a model for anything in the book. So Bran is a fitting stage for the story, but nothing more is established.
Novel, legend and history side by side
Use this table to sort what you hear on a tour or read on a souvenir.
| What it is | Where Bran fits | |
|---|---|---|
| Stoker's novel, 1897 | Fiction with an invented Count | Not named; the story is set at the Borgo Pass |
| The Dracula legend at Bran | Tourist branding and storytelling | "Dracula's Castle" is a nickname for Bran |
| Vlad III, ruler of Wallachia | A historical person | Link to Bran is weak, no secure residence or ownership |
For most visitors, a good approach is to use the Dracula story as the way into the visit and the castle's real past, from the customs fortress to Queen Marie, as the main reason to go.
How Bran became Dracula's Castle
The branding of Bran as Dracula's Castle is tied to the tourism of the 1960s and 1970s. Before that, the castle had been a medieval fortress and later a royal home. Today the name appears on signs, tickets and souvenirs.
The German name of the castle is Törzburg, the Romanian name Castelul Bran. In German-speaking countries it is often called Dracula Schloss as well. All of them point to the same building on its rock above the village.
Why this matters for your visit
Expect a museum about a royal residence. The main rooms were fitted out for Queen Marie, and the museum presents that period. Find out what the rooms look like on the inside Bran Castle page.

Visiting Bran with the legend in mind
A few ideas to get more out of the castle and the story.
Read the history first
The building privilege dates from 1377, and the castle served as a border and customs fortress. Knowing that makes the building easier to read.
Bran Castle history →Meet the real ruler
Vlad III ruled Wallachia in the fifteenth century. His story is separate from the novel and has only a loose link to Bran.
Vlad the Impaler →Plan your ticket
The standard adult ticket costs RON 100 in 2026, with reduced prices for seniors, students and children.
Tickets and opening hours →Come at the end of October
The castle runs a Halloween programme around 31 October, with its own tickets and evening events.
Halloween at Bran →Dracula Castle: frequently asked questions
Is Bran Castle really Dracula's Castle?
It is the castle marketed under that name. In Stoker's novel the castle is not Bran, and the book never names it. "Dracula's Castle" is a tourist nickname.
Did Bram Stoker visit Bran Castle?
Nothing documents a visit. Stoker never travelled to Transylvania and worked from books, maps and traditions.
Where is Dracula's castle set in the novel?
At the Borgo Pass, which is called Pasul Tihuța today. Bran lies roughly 200 km south of it.
Was Count Dracula based on Vlad the Impaler?
The Count is a literary figure and not a biographical portrait of Vlad III. The two are often mixed up, but they are different things.
Is the castle scary or a horror attraction?
The main visit is a museum of a royal residence fitted out for Queen Marie. The Dracula story is part of the marketing, not of the history of the rooms.
How much does it cost to visit?
The standard adult ticket is RON 100 in 2026. Seniors from 65 pay RON 70, students with proof RON 60 and children aged 5 to 17 RON 40. Check the tickets page for the current hours.
